Product Description:

Completely free and highly robust, Ubuntu has the power to bring the Linux desktop to the masses. Introducing Ubuntu: Desktop Linux is your key to learning this new, userfriendly, and free alternative to Windows. Think of it as a personal tutorial, a one-on-one class with an expert user of Ubuntu. It begins by helping you choose the right Ubuntu for you (yes, there’s more than one), and guides you through installing Ubuntu, managing the desktop, installing printers, and getting online. From there, the book moves on to describe how to perform everyday tasks under Ubuntu, such as sending and receiving e-mail, playing MP3s and movies, messaging with friends, working with digital images, and much more. There’s plenty of information on how to use OpenOffice.org programs such as Writer, Calc, and Impress as well. While this is an excellent book for the general consumer, the book also addresses businessoriented users of Ubuntu for the small to mediumsized business (SMB) market through the use of sidebars. This is the only “up-and-running” guide to Ubuntu you will ever need.

Summary: worth- while read for 7.04
Rating: 2

Decent coverage of most of the frequently encountered Linux application issues for desktop users of Ubuntu 7.04. Covers a 7.04 installation and then getting started. Skims over some of the frequently encountered basic and intermediate tasks but does not go into alot of detail; however of the tasks covered do have enough detail to accomplish the task. More coverage of Network manager would have been nice, especially for wi-fi. A worth-while read for 7.04 users, but is not comprehensive enough to be a sole reference.

Summary: Good but could have been better!
Rating: 3

This book is simplistic but does not really go step by step. Please understand, it will try to give you a basic/intermediate understanding of Ubuntu and try to teach some things about Linux. It is not trying to teach you Linux itself. Just Ubuntu…a particular ‘flavor’ of Linux.

I agree with a previous review that this book does not really go to deep in the ways you want it too. I also felt there was a lot of fluff…as if the author just wanted to fatten the book up a bit. Again, like many other books dealing with Ubuntu, this book does not go deeply enough into setting up, backing up and protecting your partitions and files. Things that are crucial to know because if done properly, can save you hours of pain! Something Windows users are very familiar with and trying to escape. You will definitely need a general AND CURRENT book on Linux to get those details.

Tired of the restrictions and lack of performance from Windows? Tired of needing new, powerful hardware to satisfy Windows’ bloated code? Tired of paying money for extra software like cd/dvd burning tools, backup software, MP3 ripping and burning, tired of shelling out $250 to $600 for Microsoft’s Office Suite? Come over to Linux!! No digital rights management or privacy invading issues, no network connection restrictions, no slow degraded performance due to not having a brand new computer!!

Yes, it takes time to learn and will require some effort on your part…but the rewards are well worth it.

Summary: Very Basic, Great for technophobes
Rating: 2

There is a lot of information here, but 90% of it is the kind of stuff you just figure out from noodling around a bit and paying attention. The author mostly avoids issues that will change with new releases of Ubuntu. When a new version of the operating system comes out every 6 mos, you just can’t stay on top of it all. So this turns into a very broad introduction to the most stable aspects of Ubuntu 7.04.

It is very comprehensive hand-holding for those either coming to Linux OSs fresh from a lifetime of Windows and Gates or anyone who is actually new to computing in general.

Love from Both Sides: A True Story of Soul Survival

Product Description
Beginning with the death of her husband, Dan, author and screenwriter Stephanie Riseley tells of her journey in terms both deeply emotional and powerfully physical. A genuinely personal narrative, “Love From Both Sides” explores how the concepts of love, boding and forgiveness transcend the boundaries of life and death. A memoir, memorial and celebration all at once, this book will change how you view the emotional and spiritual relationships you form with the people you love.

About the Author
Long before Elisabeth Kubler Ross made talking about death and dying commonplace, Stephanie Riseley, at the age of 19, had a classic Near Death Experience. But it wasn’t until many years later, when her husband died in her arms, and ‘came back’to her that she was forced to leap into the In Between. Her book, Love From Both Sides, tells her story.Born in Los Angeles, Stephanie attended the University of California at Berkeley in the late 1960s, when the campus was an epicentre of original and unconventional thinking. She then moved to New York City, where she appeared in Off-Off Broadway plays, and began to write short fiction and humour pieces for a syndicated column, “The Phoenix Nest”. In the 1980s, she moved back to Los Angeles, and appeared in network TV productions. At the same time, she worked for the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute doing research for the DSM III (R). Eventually, however, she decided to enroll in the UCLA School of Film and Television where she received a Masters degree. (She received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley.) At UCLA, she won the prestigious Women in Film Award, The Harmony Gold Screenwriting Award, The Jack Nicholson Screenwriting Award, and was the Paramount Fellowship nominee. She also won the Touchstone Fellowship which led to her working for Walt Disney Studios and Touchstone Films as a screenwriter.Stephanie trained with noted psychiatrist Brian Weiss, M.D., author of the best sellers, Many Masters, Many Lives; Only Love is Real; Same Soul, Many Bodies along with other four other best selling titles. From him she learned the technique of Past Life Regression and Future Progressions. She became a Certified Hypnotherapist and now works for Positive Changes Hypnosis in Beverley Hills, California, where she helps people to reprogramme their brains in order to change sabotaging behaviours.

Summary: Couldn’t put this down!
Rating: 5

This is a fascinating book which has helped me in more ways than most “grief” books I’ve found in my local library or hospice bookshelves. Ms. Riseley’s story inspired me to move forward in life and release the endless questions and rumination about my own marriage after cancer claimed my husband. It offers ways to recognize moments when other realms are guiding or contacting us, and soothing our difficult moments. Her courageous inclusion of personal (and painful) details of her own difficulties has helped me work through some of my own, and is a great incentive to continue unraveling the threads of dysfunctional relationships which drain energy which would be better applied to myself.

This book has changed my life. The important metaphysical information revealed throughout these pages is applicable to everyone on the planet as well as those “in between.” Believe me, it’s definitely worth reading!

Summary: Taking Codependency to a Whole New Dimension… Literally
Rating: 4

I think I know where they originated the idea for the character Peter Griffin of Family Guy. It is Dan!

I found the book unique in the extended time that Stephanie channeled her deceased husband. Not the length of time, but that it continued through Dan’s progression on the other side into his next life to the point of being conceived by a 15-year-old African girl on the Ivory Coast. How cool is that!

The book is a little repetitive, but that is understandable since that is what Stephanie channeled from Dan, her oversoul and spirit guide. That is the same re-creation we all go through, only for some people, it is with others in this life, and not entities on the other side. It offers a great perspective on how people who have certain issues in this reality take them with them to the other side. “Old habits die hard” must be a spiritual law.

Stephanie is so candid about her thoughts and relationships through the entire ordeal. I let out a sigh of relief when she finally let go.

Summary: Taken by surprise!
Rating: 5

A friend of mine handed me this book and said, “Here, you gotta read this! It’s amazing!” I wasn’t exactly reluctant, but then I’m an historian and stories like this almost always have little interest or appeal for me.

Well, I was gob-smacked by “Love From Both Sides.” Stephanie Riseley left me moved, amazed, and sometimes laughing out loud as she recounted her experiences while channeling the spirit? essence? of her husband in the months after his death.

Stephanie’s book is an unexpected but VERY thought-provoking examination of life, love, and death, and the interplay between the three of them. It’s sexy, funny, sad, exuberant, sometimes all at the same time, and above all it is totally honest. Because of Stephanie’s book, I will never look at my loved ones and how I relate them the same way again.

You gotta read this book!

Summary: soul work at it’s best
Rating: 4

For anyone who has ever lost someone, the challenge of getting through the days can seem overwhelming..Stephanie’s experience of channeling her husband gives readers hope. It is a very personal account of grief and the process of putting your life back together after a devastating loss. It gives readers hope that while they may have lost a loved one, they are still ‘with ‘us, and have messages from the ‘other side’.
If you’ve ever wondered whether or not your loved ones can hear you, you will be assured that they, indeed,do.
I loved this book, and only wanted to know more, what happenned next!

Summary: Whew! Powerful, insightful, moving.
Rating: 5

Powerful, insightful, moving.
Quite a learning experience for both lovers & those that desire to learn more of our interconnections on both sides of the veil.

She really pulls you into her/their pain as well as their love… oh yeah, & their passion! Whew! (I needed a cigarette after a couple of those pages!)

Either by design or over exposure, the returns & apologies got to be a drag in spots. Enough already! Found myself talking to the book; “Cut the bum off, move on.”

Hope MANY “men” read this & begin to understand that love’s not just another game to be “won”. Nor is real sensuality & total, passionate sex.

Very interesting interaction among the various entities on the other side.
Seems in many ways the only difference up there is the lack of bodies. The emotions, good & “bad”, seem to be the same. Down right laughable at times.

Thanks for going thru what you did to create & “research” this addition to our knowledge & hopefully evolvement.

Buy several & give them to men. Challenge them to read it. Challenge them to learn how to make love & not war, of any kind.

Now I just gotta find a woman like this author(!).

Smiles, Ken

A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws

Amazon.co.uk Review
“Life on Earth is a team game. It is vital to learn the rules so that you can participate and make your contribution. A game of football would be a free-for-all if everyone did their own thing, so players are taught the rules before they go on to the field. In the same way, we are taught the spiritual laws before we are born. When you understand and follow the spiritual laws you can create heaven on Earth.”

So begins Diana Cooper’s A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws, a rich introduction to the spiritual scheme of existence and a discourse in 36 chapters on what Diana Cooper believes are its essential laws. In essence, the book aims to give us a blueprint of who we are, why we’re here and how we should navigate our way through our time on Earth. Put simply, according to Diana Cooper each of us is a spirit being–a divine aspect of the eternal Source (God or whatever divinity you prefer), and before we’re born, we (a) dwell in a greater reality–the World Unseen, the domain of an infinite hierarchy of spirit beings; and (b) we are each aware of the spiritual laws and our own life goals. However, that awareness becomes suppressed and generally falls into slumber after birth because of the challenges we create for ourselves on Earth. Stress, rage, denial, greed and selfishness are just some of the negatives we succumb to–the negatives which cause us so much damage, from personal angst to collective disasters like war, poverty and political terror. At best all of this amounts to a continuing cycle of bad karma, and at worst it means humankind is in danger of descending into a spiritual dark age. However, there are many who are struggling towards the light, reconnecting with their spirit-selves and rediscovering the World Unseen. A new era of change and enlightenment is on the way–it’s due to happen around 2012, according to this book, and those who are spiritually awake will be at the forefront, guiding those of us who are still stubbornly asleep.
The author, a renowned therapist, healer and bestselling author, describes this new era in her introduction to A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws, and moves on to discuss what she sees as the essential laws that we’re all aware of deep down, from the basics such as the laws of attraction, resistance and projection, to the laws of higher awareness such as karma, mediation and grace. In the opinion of your reviewer, the lessons are easy to learn, the metaphors and anecdotes universal in their appeal–this is an essential and life-changing read if you’ve been searching for something more vital than simple “New Age” philosophy, and it’s an inspiration to those who are already on the path and need a torch to light the way forward. –Lucas LoBlack –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Summary: A wonderful little book
Rating: 4

This was the first spiritual book I ever read that actually resonated and brought a lot of peace to my life. Its concept is simple and will provide you with many answers. In parts you might think it is not very deep but for me this was always its strength, and at the time when it was given it really helped me to understand many of the things which had become a theme of my life. If your path is beginning to lack direction or purpose and a little light is all you are seeking then I cannot think of a better place to start. It really is a wonderful little book that is genuine in both heart and intention.
